Butabu (revisited) part II (1999/2000 – revisited 2020/2021)
Series total – 68 images (part II)
Butabu – adobe architecture of West Africa was published in in 2003 by Princeton Architectural Press. An Italian edition was published by Electa in 2004.
The book, which consists of 113 b&w and 64 colour photographs is a documentation of the distinctive architectural landscape of West Africa (Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Togo, Benin, Ghana and Burkina Faso;. An exhibition of the work toured the UK, USA and Ireland between 2004 and 2009. More recently images from the series have been included in the exhibitions ‘Sahel: Art and Empires on the shores of the Sahara’ at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (2020) and Tresors de l’Islam en Afrique at the Institute de Monde Arab, Paris (2019) and the Académie du Royaume du Maroc, Rabat (2020).
During the past year (2021) I revised the work; improving scans, adding new images and reworking the presentation – many images in Part II were not included in the book.
